Laura Wheless currently serves as the director of choirs at Krum High School in Krum, Texas. She served as a choral director for over 18 years. Laura graduated magna cum laude from Hardin-Simmons University is 1996 with a Bachelors of Music concentration in Vocal Performance and Acting. She received her Masters in Choral Conducting concentration in Music Education from Southern Methodist University where she graduated summa cum laude. Laura studied choral conducting under Dr. Pamela Elrod-Huffman, Dr. Robert Bode, Mr. Lloyd Hawthorne, and Mr. Jim Moore. She has performed in numerous choirs performing at ACDA, TMEA, and overseas spanning her choral career since high school years.
Prior to her work at Krum High School, Laura held positions at Webb Middle School, O’Banion Middle School in Garland, Texas and RL Turner High School, in Carrollton, Texas. She currently serves as a vocal coach, vocal instructor, and piano teacher at the Gray’s School of Music in Dallas, Texas.
Laura is proud to have grown up in the Texas public school system. She attended Irving High School, Irving, Texas under the direction of Mr. Jim Moore. She credits her early passion for music to her own mother, Janie Wheless, and choral director, Jim Moore.
Choirs under her direction consistently receive sweepstakes at the UIL Concert and Right-Reading Competition. Each year her students place in the All-Region choir and All-State performing ensembles. Laura has taken choirs to numerous festivals in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and New York where they have received superior ratings and “Best in Class” recognitions. She is an active adjudicator and clinician, and is a member of Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Choral Directors Association, American Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, Sigma Alpha Iota Fraternity, and Pi Kappa Lambda (National Music Honors Society).
